Once the excavation is completed, the formwork for the concrete footings must be installed. This step usually takes less than a day. The footings should be poured on undisturbed soil, rock, or compacted granular material. Avoid placing footings on topsoil or unstable ground.

The thickness and width of the footings may vary depending on the load they need to support and the type of soil. Generally, the footing should extend at least 4 inches beyond each side of the foundation. It is advisable to install reinforcement steel during the pouring of the footings, as the benefits greatly outweigh the costs. A key on top of the footing helps enhance the foundation’s resistance to lateral soil pressure.
